What it measures
CPI is the National Bureau of Statistics price index for a basket of consumer goods and services. The figure here is the year-on-year change in the national index.
It is the standard read on Chinese consumer inflation. A higher print lifts the case for tighter policy; a print near zero or below it is the one markets treat as a demand problem.
Compare it with PPI. CPI can stay soft while factory-gate prices jump, which is a margin story rather than a household-price story.
The number is the official year-on-year rate. It is not a seasonally adjusted monthly change, and it is revised when NBS revises the index.
