What it measures

M2 is China's broad money. The chart shows the year-on-year growth rate. The download also carries the outstanding stock, in trillion yuan.

Total social financing stock is the PBOC's wider measure of credit to the economy, including bonds, loans and other financing that M2 does not capture. Its year-on-year rate is the second line.

Together they are the monthly read on whether credit is expanding. A falling M2 rate with a falling social-financing rate is tighter conditions; one rising while the other does not is a change in the mix, not a simple easing.

M2 history on this page comes from the public EastMoney mirror of the PBOC money-supply table. Social financing is parsed from the PBOC's own statistical releases. The PBOC does not publish an advance calendar, so the next release is unknown.
